Zavratnica Nature Park is a stunning yet relatively lesser-known natural attraction located in Croatia.
It is situated in the northern Adriatic region, near the town of Jablanac, approximately 50 kilometers south of Senj.

Zavratnica's Unique Landscape

Zavratnica is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, featuring a deep and narrow inlet or canyon that extends into the Velebit Mountain range.
Formation of Zavratnica Canyon
The park's main attraction, the Velebit Channel (or Zavratnica Canyon), was created during the Ice Age by a combination of land sinking and sea-level rise. This geological phenomenon has given Zavratnica its unique, fjord-like appearance that captivates visitors.

Renowned as the most beautiful bay of the northern Adriatic, Zavratnica is a must-visit destination in Croatia.
Accessible Pathways
A scenic 15-minute walk from Jablanac along the sea path leads to a viewpoint with a magnificent view of the entire bay. Visitors can also descend from the village of Zavratnica via a sandy path.
Hiking Trails
For adventure enthusiasts, the marked Alan hiking trail showcases some of the most stunning landscapes of the Velebit range. The trail ascends to a long-established lookout point offering views of the open sea, the nearby island of Rab, and the dramatic gray cliffs of Velebit.

Geological and Natural Features

Unique Geological Formations
Dear Lykkers. The bay extends nearly 800 meters, framed by steep limestone slopes from the Paleogene era. The entrance depth of about 20 meters gradually shallows towards the bay's end.
Peaceful Atmosphere
The serenity of the bay is interrupted only by the sounds of nature, such as seagulls, bees, and gentle waves. Occasionally, boats and sailboats dock here for a peaceful retreat.

Zavratnica for Diving Enthusiasts

Diving Spots
The coast along the Velebit Mountain is perfect for diving, with walls plunging to depths of over 60 meters. These walls are adorned with diverse marine plants, sponges, and gorgonians.
Marine Life
The underwater ecosystem features scorpions, eels, sea frogs, and various crustaceans.
Wreck Diving
At the bottom of Zavratnica Bay lies a sunken German transporter, located at a depth of 1–10 meters. This site is ideal for beginner divers and free-diving enthusiasts.

Notable Visitors

Miss Universe Croatia 2012, Elizabeta Burg, visited Zavratnica for the first time and was mesmerized by its beauty. The bay also hosted notable figures such as Ivana Trump and Italian businessman Riccardo Mazzucchelli, whose resting place now overlooks the Adriatic Sea near Jablanac.
